New Program: AACcelerate

AACcelerate Your Potential at CI Pediatric Therapy Centers! ---

Check out CI’s new program for children with complex communication needs who are in need of an augmentative alternative communication system to optimize their expressive language skills!

AACcelerate is a 4-week high-frequency program that provides comprehensive speech and occupational therapy services 4 days a week, 2-3 hours a day to jumpstart the child’s communication skills. The program focuses on matching features of a high- and/or low-tech communication system to meet the child’s language and access needs. Children with an existing communication system whose families would like to further explore customized feature matching are appropriate for this program as well.

Program goals target the areas of expressive and receptive language skills, alternative access, seating and positioning, motor planning, and functional vision. Our team of OTs and SLPs will bring comprehensive knowledge and skills from their own unique scopes of practice to provide a truly transdisciplinary approach to evaluation and treatment.

The program is tailored to each child’s unique needs and includes comprehensive evaluations to establish baselines, goal areas, and a treatment plan. Families receive a home program upon completion of the program which includes equipment recommendations, strategies for utilizing the child’s communication system at home, and instruction on modeling their language system for all caregivers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AAC?

AAC stands for augmentative alternative communication. It is an umbrella term that encompasses multiple modes of communication outside of the spoken voice including sign-language, gestures, low-tech communication board, and speech generative devices.

My child already has an AAC system. Can you help?

We meet each family wherever they are in the AAC system development process. Children who already have a system may benefit from our program to boost their communication skills or to re-evaluate unique features and access methods that may optimize functional use of the system.

Another provider said my kid isn't ready for a device. Can you get them one?

While we cannot guarantee that each child will leave the program with recommendations for a speech generating device, we do believe that extended evaluation is required to truly assess readiness and appropriateness for any AAC system. Your child will leave this program with recommendations for communication system options, whether they are high- or low-tech.

Will my child leave this program with a speech generating device?

All AACcelerate programs will be structured differently depending on the needs of the child, and the experience your child has coming into the program. Our program is designed to boost communication skills, and provide an extended and comprehensive evaluation of the child’s needs. We want to match each child with the device that is best suited for them.

Some children will require more than 4 weeks to determine exactly which type of AAC system will be best for them, but families will leave with a roadmap to achieve that goal.
